Not only was he a great white player when the color barrier was lifted but he also had three offspring flourish during an era when the black to white ratio was flipped in comparison to Rick's (one of his son's even won a dunk contest!)

One of the greatest point guards and passers in NBA History, he has more assists than anyone in history, and some of those assists weren't to Karl Malone

On Stockton:
“He doesn't dribble behind his back or through his legs.  He doesn't crossover. His highlight reel features primarily bounce passes and layups.  Despite evidence to the contrary these days, that's basketball.  He doesn't practice the no-look pass, but we'll all be poorer not able to watch him anymore."

                                                                        - Sam Smith, Basketball Columnist with Chicago Sun Times

4) Pete Maravich

aravic wa sone of the best college players in the history of the game, one of the best pure scorers and of the best white shooting guards. He was flashy before flashy was flashy and is a player that most point guards, black and white, want their games to model.

Quote: They don't pay you a million dollars for two-hand chest passes.

Pete Maravich Accomplishments:

  • 2x All-NBA First Team
  • 5x NBA All-Star
  • 1x NBA Scoring Champion (1977)
  • 18th All-Time in Points Per Game
  • 1x College Player of the Year
  • Averaged 44 points a game while at LSU

  • 3) George Mikan

There aren't that many good white big men in the history of the NBA, so my first choice at center is the original, who revolutionized the game and was the first NBA player in the Hall of Fame (despite only being retired three years).  Also amazing is that he won, in college, the NBL and the NBA, eight championships in ten years.  Here's what he's done (note that MVP is out the question, as it wasn't awarded during his time, nor was the All-Star Game played until the 1951 season).

Mikan on Big Men numbers and his speed:
“Cheetahs are fast. They run 70 miles an hour, and our jersey numbers happen to start in the 70's.”
    George Mikan Accomplishments:
    • 5x BAA/NBA Champion (1949, 1950, 1952, 1953, 1954)
    • 2x NBL Champion (1947, 1948)
    • 6x All-NBA First Team

2) Jerry West

The symbol of the NBA (literally, he's the logo) Jerry West is probably the best white basketball player aside of Larry Bird...maybe including Larry Bird.  He might even be a better GM than a player. He won 6 championships as GM of the Lakers and the Memphis Grizzlies e see now are his creation.

Quote: You can't get much done in life if you only work on the days when you feel good.

Jerry West Accomplishments:

  • 1x NBA Champion (1972)

  • 25th All-Time in Assists
  • 8th All-Time in Offensive Win Shares

  • 1) Larry Bird

arry Bird is a Celtics Legend and NBA legend best known for his sweet jumper, everlasting motor, McDonald's commercials and resemblance to f his surname, Bird.

Best White Quote: As far as playing, I didn't care who guarded me - red, yellow, black. I just didn't want a white guy guarding me, because it's disrespect to my game.
    Larry Bird Accomplishments:
    3x NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986)
    • 3x NBA MVP (1984, 1985, 1986)

Tim Tebow and Tom Brady: Hated by Association

Tim Tebow and Tom Brady. Similar and Different. Both Quarterbacks. Both division champs. Both media gods,  underrated playmakers, at least at the two year mark in each ones respective careers.

One's the Golden Boy, one the Golden Child. They both attended big time schools, with big time histories and with multiple big time rivals (Brady's Michigan is bitterly hated by Ohio St. and in state rival Mich. St. while Florida's got Tennessee, Florida St. and University of Miami). Each had that college moment that was idolized by the schools that call them idols (Tebow crying on the sideline and the speech, Brady the 98' season of second comebacks and the 98' Orange Bowl).
They even share the unwavering, eye on the prize opponent torturing focus and cool in the face of their biggest challenges.
But it is the unbridled, unrelenting dislike of these two individuals for being themselves. You might stop reading there and say, "what channel are you watching!?!?", but,  the truth is, Tom Brady and Tim Tebow are winners, and they win by never changing who they are to get ahead. They do it the way they have always done it and how winners have done it. They believed in themselves, blocked out what they heard about themselves that was negative and just plain worked harder than you. And they are left to take the public bullet when the media gushed so much over them that those who aren't fans developed such a discourse for the constant feeding of stories, specials, coverage and analysis that the dislike for constant coverage is pointed towards those that are, in this case Tebow and Brady.

I am not a Brady or Tebow fanatic, Pats or Broncos fan or Florida Gator or Michigan Wolverine. Far from it.  I bleed black and gold ( Steelers)and green and orange (The U). Both qb's. and the teams they are associated with have broken my heart too many times on the field of play to count. But I'm a realist. They are and should be the good guys. Tebow is devout in his faith and lives in it the way your supposed. (I should know: I went to catholic schools from preschool to college). Brady says the right thing, lives within the law and gets attention for how he helps his team and his sport rather than hurt it. No animal cruelty, drunken irresponsibility or member's chairs in strip clubs.

But instead of taking what we see and read and leaving well enough alone, we fall victim to the rumors, to the maybes, the what ifs, the things they haven't done or what the detracting media coverage has to say.

Tim Tebow has two halves in the media and the public eye.

The first is an everybody man. He is the guy that overachieves, gets the good job and has all the friends in the world. But he had to earn every bit of it and that, along with what it allowed him to accomplish, that created the following and eventual media love he now is now encompassed in. You could say that Urban Meyer's man crush on him was the only reason Tebow even got a chance at quarterback and didn't become a tailback too slow to make a difference as. Or you can look at his quiet fire and incomparable motor, never wavering, quitting on himself or his teammates and allows keeping an even keel. Some might see tv spots like the pre draft special and the Mic'd up special that Tebow agreed to the added publicity and thusly is a glutton for the attention. Or you can look at what they reveal, a work ethic that saw him working 12 hours a day to become a legit first round qb that would fold who he was to get more coin. Watch the Mic'd up, a contractual obligation rather one players sign up for, that further proves his religious qualities, ability to let his obligation to others keep his glass half full and ice cube cool while letting that same quiet and spiritual confidence stir them and keep them ready and stable.

His public image is one that children should see more often, rather than the Lawrence Phillips, the Jemarcus Russell's and the Pac Man Jones'. Heck, even the Ochocincos. That we vilify him for it is a proof that our entertainment barometers need some adjusting.

Tom Brady is similar in his cool demeanor that is infectious and calming for a Patriots team that has own the AFC East every season that he's commanded. Similar in his "awe shucks" appeal in the media  and that he has had to work to get were he is. He fought off Drew Henson, a mega amateur talent, and Brian Griese, son of a Legend and future quarterback for Tebow's Broncos. He had to earn the Michigan Wolverine communities respect after they booed him relentlessly and screamed for his benching and a coach who nearly let him transfer from Michigan in Lloyd Carr. His infamous seventh round selection put him behind Drew Bledsoe but he beat him out too. He can barely throw 50 yards, runs worse than a 4.9 40 and will never win a strongman competition. But his competitiveness makes him Jordan-esque. Not as talented as you but infinitely more resourceful and harder working then you. And we hate him for it. That and his Jeter-esque tabloid attention. But also like Jeter, he never was a cheater, domestic violator or club hopper like most athletes with millions of money and as many women chasing him. He put winning and team above all and deflects accolades to his team and family, just like Jeter. Top it off his marriage and baby on the way with Gisele Bundchen.

His public image could have easily became Ryan Leafs, Ben Roethlisberger's or Mike Vick, but by keeping his nose to the ground and eye's on the prize he stays the straight and narrow.

Big Ben has two accusations of rape,
and countless horror stories from fans in Pittsburgh. Pacman Jones lives in strip clubs and has more mug shots thn mugs. Mike Vick did some really bad things and Lawrence Phillips is in jail for 31 years for domestic battery, drugs and using his vehicle as a weapon by running it into three teens.

Tim Tebow  and Tom Brady are hated
hated by Hurricanes, Seminoles, Spartans, Buckeyes,  Jets, Dolphins, Chargers and now Steelers.  But it should be for the reason they should rather than the reason why have been hated. Because they are who they are and do what they do, win. No matter how much we hate it.
But if you had two baby boys and you wanted them to emulate someone, would it be Brady and Tebow or Lawrence Phillips and Brett Favre?

Green Bay Packers New York Giants Predictions - List to Live By

Matchup: Green Bay Packers vs. New York Giants
Location: Lambeau Field
Time: Jan. 15th, 2012, 4:30 PM
Line: -9

When the clock strikes 4:30 on Sunday, Aaron Rodgers and the now healthy Green Bay Packers will face Eil Manning and the New York Giants. With a week to rest and several weeks for the like of Greg Jennings, Brian Baluga, Chad Clifton and Josh Sitton (the latter two who missed the two sack affair in the regualr season meeting) the Packers seem primed and ready to step onto Lambeau Field and do what everyone expects them to do, win. Obviously though, expectations can't win the game for you, nor will the Giants and Tom Coughlin lay down and take it either. So we gotta play the game.

Quick Hits to Make you Think:

- Three fifths of the Packers line were injured in the first matchup, Brian Baluga, Josh Sitton and Chad     Clifton
- Josh Sitton and and Clifton didn't even suit up
- The Giants still on recorded two sacks in that game
- The Giants are 27th against the past in overall on Defense
- Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora did not play against the Packers
- Justin Tuck Missed Four Games, Osi Umenyiora Seven Games, Jason Pierre Paul Zero
- Giants are 4-1 in games all three played
- They beat the Dolphins, Patriots, Cowboys and Falcons and lost to San Francisco by a touchdown
- In those games the Giants had 19 sacks and gave up 219 ypg
- The Packers have given up 41 sacks 11th worst in the league
- Giants are third in the league in sacks
- Green Bay allows 4.7 yards a carry
- Kansas City averaged 4.5 in the Packers Lone Loss
- Kansas City had zero turnovers
Teams were 79-26 this year when they avoided even a single turnover, and the Giants were 4-0 in such games
The Packers haven't won a single game in which they didn't force a takeaway since December of 2005. 2005
- Eli Manning has 16 interceptions on the year and the Giants have only 6 fumbles as a team
- Eli Manning's home road splits are nearly identical.
- The Packers had 6 drops by receivers in the K.C. Loss
- Jermichael Finley had three in that game and three in the Giants game
- He also had 6 receptions 87 yards and a touchdown against linebackers in that game
7 NFC #1's have ever lost at home, but three have been in the past four years, one was the Giants

With all that said we can say a few things that need to be done by each team to win.

-Eli and the Giants offense should play clean, Jacobs should dominate the ball and the Giants offense should keep the Packers offense off the field.
-The Packers offense must protect Aaron Rodgers, catch the ball and attack the middle of the field, much like the first game.
-The Giants defense must get coverage sacks to allow more players in coverage and more time for the Ends to get into the back field to disrupt Rodgers.
-The Packers defense needs to play smart, read Eli and force him to make bad decisions, though their pass rush is lacking right now.

Bold Predictions
- New York Giant running backs will total over 200 total yards
- Pierre Paul won't have a sack
- Umenyiora will have at least two.
- Eli Manning will have at least 4 touchdowns

-Jermichael Finley will have the best game among Rodgers targets
- Dom Capers defense will not rebound, points wise
- The Packers will not force a turnover
- The Packers will get at least 4 sacks
- Clay Matthews will have 3 of them

- Eli Manning and Aaron Rodgers will be beaten and bruised, exchange crunch time touchdown drives but Rodgers' will be the second and the Packers will win:

Green Bay Packers 31
New York Giants 28

Houston Texans vs Cincinnati Bengals Prediction

The 3rd seeded Houston Texans will host the Cincinnati Bengals in a matchup of rookie QB's, one by design and one due to injury. The Houston Texans are backing into the playoffs. After starting the year 10-3 the Texan drop three and its seems due to injury, lack of experience, and new wrinkles becoming old wrinkles, hence easily exposed by opposing teams. With Matt Schaub going down for the season for the third season in five for the Texans, the team turn to Matt Leinhart, who immediately went down with a season ender of his own to settle on T.J. Yates, the first year quarterback out of North Carolina and the ACC. Yates saw success in his first four games with four wins in a row, with a limited offense, Andre Johnson was in and out and Arian Foster was limited) and did well to keep the Texans in line to capture their first division championship and and playoff appearance. But after three losses and serious injuries to the prior players noticed as well as defensive end Mario Williams, the 2006 overall pick and perennial sack threat. The fact they were able to survive these injuries and continue to win is a testament to their coaches and toughness.
The Cincinnati Bengals, after much scrutiny centered around the retention of Coach Marvin Lewis, stance on Carson Palmer and trading of Chad Ochocinco, the Bengals entered the season with many questions and plenty to prove. But with the amazing rookie season put up by TCU product of Andy Dalton and big play ability of fellow rooie A.J. Green out of Georgia, the Bengals surprised the NFL to the tune of a 9-7 record and playoff birth. A defense that semed to grow up this year position by position, due to the removal of players detremental to locker room environment and team mentality, rankd 7th in the league and fought division foes and perennial playoff contenders Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens to tough losses and proved they belonged.
A matchup in week 14 saw the two rookie QB's square off in what amounted to a playoff preview of the this weeks coming matchup, this time set in Houston rather than the Queen City of Cincy.  The Houston Texans are the only team in the playoffs that can claima top ten spot in Defense, Offense and Margin of Victory, a major indicator of playoff success. However, it may seem difficult to get a read on the Texans true abilities and how they will do in their first ever playoff game. A respectable 320 yards per game with Yates under center gives hope to a team that lost key players on offense, but it was against 3 teams in the top 15 in defense yards per game and 3 against teams outside of it, showing if nothing else consistency. But an 18 pont per game average 15 field goals to 9 touchdowns shows that their ability to punch it in for a touchdown needs to improve if they are to have a shot against a Bengals defense that is adept at getting to the quarterback (5th in sacks) and at holding the run (10th). However, the same defense is 25th in redzone defense. Adding the return of a healthy Arian Foster and Andre Johnson could spell success for the Texans 25th ranked Redzone offense. As long as the solid performance of the Houston Texans line holds up they can put up enough points to win in what looks to be a tough and close battle.
Andy Dalton and A.J. Green have stolen the spot light from the the rest of the offense, and the likes of Cedric Benson (1,000 yard rusher and top pass blocker) as well Jerome "Front Flippin" Simpson are great complements to the rookies on offense, as well a second Oklahoma Tight End Jerome Gresham. Dalton has the targets and the time necessary (4rd lowest sack total by offensive line at 25 allowed) to reach his targets and convert scoring drives, but his accuracy and ability hit big plays on a sack fast 3-4 defense will be key for the Texans offense to score. Dalton has shown his rookeie streak by showing an inability at times to focus early on in games and has been taken out early of a few games because of it. His focus and leadership need to be unwavering for the Texans to have a chance against a defense ranked 9th in Redzone D and has 45 sacks on the season.

All in all, this game will be simialr to the week 14 matchup, with this game coming down to last minute dramatics. Look for Arian Foster to have a solid game on the ground and through the air against marginal Bengal Linebackers and for J.J. Watt to make big plays on defense for the Texans. A.J. Green will get his share of highlights as well as the Bengal O but the Texans will pull out their first game at home with the classic playoff formula of running, defense and ball control.

Final Score: Houston Texans 27 Cincinnati Bengals 23

Steelers - Broncos Predictions

Game: Denver Broncos vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
Date: January 8th 2012
Time: 4:30PM Eastern Time
Line: Steelers: -9
Over/Under: 34

Tebowmania is in the building and the Playoffs as the Denver Broncos and the number one rushing offense in  the NFL host the Pittsburgh Steelers and the number one overall and passing defense. The Broncos will look to force the issue with the run behind Tebow and 1,000 yard rusher Willis McGahee. The Steelers will counter on offense with two time Champion Ben Roethlisberger playing on an ankle that has hampered his play for nearly the entire month of December. With an inability to step into throws Big Ben or evade the rush as he can Ben has been left to a 56% completion rate with 3 interceptions in his last two starts. Over that period he has missed a game and the Pittburgh offense, with hi playing, on has one touchdown. To add more injury to injry, the Steelers will be without their leading rusher in Rashard Mendenhall, who tore his ACL in the season finale versus the Cleveland Browns and possibly starting Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey with a similar high ankle sprain to Roethlisberger's.
With that said the Steelers still sport a strong defense that is number one overall and number one against the pass, holding opposing quarterbacks to 54% completion percentages, 171 yards a game and a paltry 71.7 quarterback rating. Toss in the fact that they are a top ten run defense, only 300 yards of leader San Francisco's pace and you have a defense that can win a game for your offense, healthy or not. This defense also, unlike it's offense, will be nearly at full strength, with a full complement of healthy and dangerous linebackers, run stopping lineman and playmaker Troy Polamalu. The Steelers will only be with Safety Ryan Clark, though he is their leading tackler  at 100.
The Broncos defense, though only ranked 20th, is better than its ranking.may suggest. They have captain Champ Bailey in the secondary to limit Mike Wallace, defensive rookie of the year candidate Von Miller at linebacker and sack master Elvis Dumervill on the line. This a fast defense with very solid linebacker play.
The 4th seeded Denver Broncos will fall to the 5th seeded Pittsburgh Steelers (Barely) due to the Steelers superior defense, ability to get to the quarterback and ability to stop the run (the d-lines ability to demand the o-lines attention leaves the linebackers free to make full tackles.)

The Broncos will struggle to pass against the Steelers and could witness a horrible day by second year QB Tim Tebow. Expect blind side rushers (Ziggy Hood and Lamar Woodley) to have a great day rushing from the right side of the line. Willis Mcgahee to be a non-factor (33 yards a game against Steelers in career). If the Broncos are to have any success they will have to pass over top the Steelers D, but Tebow won't get nearly enough time to wait for that to develop.

The Steelers may have to wait for Big Ben's ankle to warm up, and will be able to lean on backup Issac Redman, favored as the better back over Mendenhall by Pittsburgh media, against an 11th ranked run defense until the play action play and Big Ben ankle can develop into factors.

The Steelers D will over whelm the former Gator and the Steelers and a Denver secondary second to last in give up pass plays of 40+ yards (see Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown) will win their second consecutive playoff game in Denver.

Final Score: Pittsburgh Steelers 24 Denver Broncos 6

Super Bowl Coaches Predict Superbowl Contenders

Recently, two of the last decades best superbowl coaches were asked who they thought would be this year's super bowl matchup. Here's what they had to say.

Who do you like in the Super Bowl?
Cowher: I will take New Orleans and Pittsburgh. I think Pittsburgh is a team that can go on the road, they are built to do that with their great defense, and do that all three games. Pittsburgh has great matchups with New England (13-3) or Baltimore (12-4). New Orleans is the one team that can go back up and beat Green Bay. I’m picking the hot hand there.
Dungy: Well, I started out early on with Pittsburgh and Green Bay and I’m going to stick with that. If Ben is healthy, that has a good chance to play out. The team that is scary to me is the Giants. I think they can make some noise.

It is one thing to read Cowher's statement and assume hometown and personal bias. But to see Dungy take the same approach speaks volumes to what the Steelers are built to do and that is play defense, the winning solution to every Super Bowl team outside of the 2006 Colts. New Orleans is defenitely the hot hand and possesses the most statistically accomplish QB of the year in Drew Brees and are the only team that can match Green Bay point for point. Green Bay however, is a special team that, week 15 notwithstanding, know how to win the close games. This will be easily one of the best playoffs to date.
